Sarah Carr

For as long as I can remember I have been moved by landscape.  A certain point of view, a specific relationship between shapes and spaces, attracts my eye. As I work I become aware that my real inspiration is how I feel about the location. I intuitively play with color, light, texture, and movement. They speak to me of mysteries of time and place.  Finally, I see my images not only as exploration of external relationships, but also as discovery of my own internal landscapes.

This autumn marks the 50th anniversary of my family’s move from rural New Jersey to Santa Barbara, where new worlds opened.  Our first residence here was on the Mesa, which has been where I’ve lived the major part of my life. I attended Santa Barbara High, graduated from UCSB in Art, and later earned a teaching credential from UCSB.  I taught art at Dos Pueblos High and Goleta Valley Junior High for over 30 years.  During a sabbatical I earned a Masters of Art Education from Rhode Island School of Design, fulfilling an old dream to go to art school.  Now that I am retired I’m enjoying the opportunity to paint even more.  My favorite medias are pastel and oil, though many other materials appeal to me as well.

My work is shown locally at the Corridan Gallery, 125 North Milpas Street. I am a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, the Goleta Valley Art Association, Carpinteria Valley Arts Council, and SCAPE (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment), where I served on the board for 3 years. Currently I am serving on the board of SAF (Student Art Fund), a nonprofit which raises money for art supplies for the local public secondary schools. I have shown my works in many art shows locally, in both invitational and juried exhibits. Of the number of awards I have been fortunate to have received, I am especially honored to have been awarded the Glenna Hartmann Memorial Award for Best Pastel in the summer of 2008.
